The company will produce the 517 and later 4800/14xx and 5800 classes

517 Class

The 517 Class were small 0-4-2T tank engines designed by George Armstrong for local passenger work on the Great Western Railway. 144 were built at Wolverhampton Works in 13 lots and were outshopped between 1868 and 1885.

During the late 1880’s and early 1890’s most had their wheelbases lengthened to 15 foot 6 inches and from 1904 onwards several were converted to auto train working which scattered them over the system.

When Charles Collett became CME, during 1924 he widened the tanks and provided a new cab with extended bunker which became the Swindon rebuild and outwardly looked very similar to the later 48xx class he designed in 1932.

The last of the class 1159 was withdrawn in August 1947 just missing out on nationalization. All members of the class were disposed of with none making it into preservation.

Dapol will be making models having the later modified chassis with longer wheelbase and side tanks replacing the saddle tanks including open and closed cab versions.

4800 / 14xx & 5800

The 48XX and 58xx was designed to replace the earlier 19th-century George Armstrong Wolverhampton 517 class. Charles Collett improved the design with new higher-pressure boilers and an improved cab. A total of 75 14xx were built with auto gear for working with trailer cars and when introduced were numbered 48xx to 4874 with 20 non-auto fitted 58xx class constructed for general purpose traffic.

The first locomotives entered service in 1932, with most running into the 1960s. The 4800 with autocoach meant the locomotive could be controlled from there which negated the requirement to run the locomotive round at the end of the journey. This format was known as a push-pull train. After the war experiments with oil firing of the 28xx class would be renumbered in the 48xx class, therefore the original 48xx class were renumbered 1400 to 1474.

Four members of the class have been preserved 1420, 1442. 1450 and 1466
